Hashtags
How Many Hashtags for Instagram Reels? Only 5 Count (2026)
The answer used to be "up to 30". It's now five at most, and the ones you pick matter more than the number.
The short answer
Use 3 to 5 hashtags that describe your reel exactly. Since December 2025 Instagram counts at most five per post and ignores the rest. Hashtags help Instagram file your reel for search; they don't push it to more people. A caption with clear, searchable words does more for discovery.
The rule changed in December 2025
For years the limit was 30, and the standard advice was to use all of them. In December 2025, Instagram's head Adam Mosseri and the @Creators account announced that posts and Reels are capped at five hashtags. Mosseri's reasoning: a few specific tags work better than a long list of generic ones. He has also said hashtags help people find content through search but don't really increase reach.
So the question isn't "how many can I squeeze in" any more. It's "which five, if any, actually describe this reel?"
How to pick the five
A simple mix that works for most niches:
- One for the topic: what the reel is about, e.g.
#sourdough. - Two for the specific angle: who it's for or what it solves, e.g.
#sourdoughtips,#sourdoughbeginner. - One for the wider category: e.g.
#homebaking. - Optional, one for the community: a tag your niche actually follows, e.g.
#breadbaking.
Ask of every tag: would someone searching this be happy to find my reel? If not, drop it.
Tags that do nothing
#viral, #fyp, #explore, #reels, #trending, #instagood. They describe every reel ever posted, so they tell Instagram nothing about yours. Each one also uses up one of your five slots.
Where discovery actually comes from now
If hashtags don't bring reach, what does? Two things.
The reel itself
Instagram shows a new reel to a small group first and widens it if people watch, send and like it. A reel nobody finishes won't be saved by any combination of tags. See how the 2026 algorithm ranks Reels.
Your caption
Instagram search reads captions, and since July 2025 Google can index public posts from professional accounts. Saying "sourdough tip for beginners" in the first line of your caption helps you get found far more than a sixth hashtag would. Our caption guide shows how.
Common questions
Hashtags in the caption or in the first comment?
Put them in the caption. That's where Instagram and search engines read them, and it keeps everything about the reel in one place.
Should every reel use the same hashtags?
No. Tags should describe each reel. If you always post the same five, at least two of them are probably describing your account, not the reel.
Can I use zero hashtags?
Yes, and plenty of big creators do. If your caption already says clearly what the reel is about, you lose very little. Two or three accurate tags are still a cheap way to help Instagram file it.
How GroReel helps
Let GroReel pick the five
A check flags every hashtag that's doing nothing, and tells you whether your caption can be found at all.
- Filler-tag check: lists tags like #viral and #fyp that waste your five slots.
- Findability score: whether your caption uses the words people actually search.
- Rewrite my caption (free after a check): a new caption with a searchable first line, one clear ask and five specific hashtags.
Built on the same signals this guide covers. 1 free check · no card · your video is deleted after the check.
Questions people ask
How many hashtags are allowed on Instagram in 2026?
Five. Since December 2025 Instagram counts at most five hashtags on a post or Reel; anything beyond that is ignored.
How many hashtags should I use on Instagram Reels?
Three to five that describe the reel exactly: one for the topic, two for the specific angle, and one or two for the wider category or community.
Do hashtags increase reach on Instagram?
Not much. Instagram's head Adam Mosseri has said hashtags help people search but don't really increase reach. Watch time, sends and a searchable caption matter more.
