Your caption is now a search result. Here's how to write one that gets found and then gets read.

The short answer

Put what the reel is about, in the words people search, in the first line of your caption. Then give the value, then one clear ask. Since July 2025 Google can show public Reels from professional accounts in search results, so a caption people would search for now works on two search engines at once.

Why captions matter more than they used to

Two changes made the caption one of the most useful parts of a reel:

Hashtags matter less: since December 2025 Instagram counts only five, and says they don't really increase reach. See how many hashtags to use.

The first line does the most work

Only the first line or so shows before "more", and it's the part search reads first. It should say what the reel is about in the words a person would actually type.

The right-hand versions are also better hooks, so you don't trade readability for search.

A caption template that works

[First line: the topic, in searchable words, framed as the problem or the result]

[2–5 short lines: the value. The steps, the reason, the thing you learned.]

[One ask: send it, save it, comment a word, or follow for part 2. Pick one.]

Filled in:

Flat sourdough? It's probably your water, not your starter.

I blamed my flour for months. Then I checked the water: 18°C. Yeast barely wakes up that cold. Warm it to 26°C before you mix. Same flour, same starter, twice the rise.

Send this to the friend whose bread keeps coming out flat.

How long should the caption be?

As long as the value needs. A joke or a vibe reel needs one line. A how-to can carry the full list or steps, which also gives people a reason to keep the reel playing while they read. What matters is that the first line earns the "more" tap.

One ask, not three

"Follow for more, comment below, save this and send it to a friend" asks for four things, so people do none of them. Choose the one action this reel is built for:

Questions people ask

Do Instagram captions affect reach?

They affect discovery more than reach. Instagram search and, since July 2025, Google read your caption to decide when to show your reel to people searching a topic. The reel itself still has to hold attention to be pushed further.

Can Google show my Instagram Reels in search?

Yes, if your account is public, professional (creator or business) and owned by someone over 18. Settings → Privacy → 'Allow public photos and videos to appear in search engine results' must be on; it is by default.

Should I put keywords or hashtags in my caption?

Both, but keywords first. A clear first line in searchable words does more than extra hashtags, and Instagram only counts five hashtags anyway.
